Any suggestions for a hairstyle for a cocktail party?

I don't want it to look like prom hair, but I'm only in college, so I don't want anything that looks too old, either. I'd really like to wear it down, or half up half down or something like that. My hair is straight and 6 or 7 inches past my shoulders (aka long!) and strawberry blonde (if it matters, I don't think it does, though). If you have a website with a picture of your suggestion, that would be pretty amazing, too! And step by step instructions would be helpful. Thank you so so so much! :-D

You can make a sophisticated ponytail by wearing it low, wrapping a section of your hair around the elastic and securing it with a pin.

Hair bands are in this season. Plain thin ones are very classic. Or you can use a scarf for a retro '60s look. You can embellish plain ones with hot glue beads for an evening look.

You can make your hair into a neat bun. For a plain but finished look, pin down strays w/ hair pins that have tortoise shell on one side. (Goody makes them.) For a dressier effect use hair pins w/ pearls or rhinestones.

You can loosely braid your hair %26amp; create a bun.

Allure %26amp; InStyle are really good magazines for hair style ideas. The April issue of Allure has photos of 3 elegant updos w/ instructions and diagrams.
